"I believe that women are the backbone of Guatemala's rural families. By providing opportunity to these young women, we can help the entire society."
Francisco Colom
"Abriendo Oportunidades" (Creating Opportunities) supports Guatemala's most disadvantaged population: rural, indigenous girls ages 8-17. The program provides them with a safe space to meet and learn valuable life skills.
Early marriages, childbearing and dropping out of school are the norm for indigenous girls in Guatemala. Nearly 40% of indigenous girls marry before age 18 and more than 67% live in rural areas, often without access to social services.
Participation in the program builds girls' self-esteem, offers them support from peers, and informs them about sexual/reproductive health. This program helps girls to make more informed, responsible choices and teaches them to advocate for their rights.
The program helps girls create a "life plan" in which they learn to work towards achieving higher levels of schooling, have more independence, delay childbirth, decide the size of family they desire, and become role-models for younger girls.
Abriendo Oportunidades is a program of Population Council
